This past Pelican Festival was,
in many folks opinion, the best one of the past few
years. The festival goers turned out in record numbers;
the weather couldn’t have been any better; the
entertainment was the finest and spirits were high.
Thanks go out to Glorie Thacher
and Paula Davis the awesome staff at the Grand Lake
Association and to Sherry Lybarger, owner of Fine
Threads and this year’s President of the Downtown
Merchants Association for all of their efforts in
planning and putting the event together. Grand job
ladies.
Of course this event would not
have been possible had it not been for the Grove City
staff and the Grove Council. The comments received from
the attendees were all positive as everyone enjoyed the
one festive location. It was a successful and
celebratory 25th Anniversary event.
Now it’s time to tell you about
the next upcoming weekend events you can participate in
around beautiful northeastern Oklahoma and Grand Lake O’
the Cherokees.
Let’s start off with the “Annual
Grand Wine Country Fall Festival” occurring Saturday the
11th at the entrance to Monkey Island. The
event is being held at Grand Lake Vineyards aka Royal
Horse Ranch and features wine tasting, live music, great
food and various artists will be on hand displaying
their wares. Adults 21 and over are $15.00 each which
includes a souvenir tasting glass and eight wine tasting
tickets. Those not wishing to taste wine get in for
$5.00. Our friends from Helicopter Advantage will be on
hand offering rides over the lake for a nominal fee.
Event starts at 11:00 am and runs until 5:00 pm. For
more information call 918-257-1166 or visit
www.grandwinecountry.com.
Another fun time is the Grove
Chamber’s car show; the “Annual Harvest Moon Cruise.”
This event will be held at the Grove Community Center at
Third Street and Broadway. Registration begins at 9:00
am, judging starts at noon, car show all day. The Cruise
will begin at 4:00 pm starting from the Community
Center, cruising to Harps and back to the Community
Center. Trophies will be awarded at 5:00 pm. For more
details call the Grove Chamber of Commerce at
918-786-9079.
The Green Country Squares are
holding a dance at the Grove Community Center on
Saturday evening. The Caller is Harold Hailey with Nancy
Keller cueing rounds. This dance will start at 7:30 and
end at 10:00 pm. For more information call 918-786-7637.
For some rough and tumble fun,
D-Day Adventure Park is holding their “Fall 4x4
Invasion” from Friday through Sunday. The campground and
Café will be open during this event. On Saturday there
will be all day Army truck tours of the facility. Events
include the West Hill Climb at 10:00 am, then at 11:00
it’ll be the Log Jam/Rock Pile/Money Pit competition and
at 1:00 pm the Fast Mud Trucks compete. Any 4x4
attending the event can run the mud track for fun at no
charge; there are entry fees for the other events but
it’s a 100% payback. For all the rules and regulations
be sure to visit their website at
www.ddayadventurepark.com or call 918-666-3411.
The annual Grand Lake Sailboat
Club Cruise week begins on October 12. Cruise with them
for the full six days or the last three. They’ll dock
every night near a restaurant or in a slip with indoor
plumbing and showers available or you can anchor out
nearby if you prefer. You can get the entire schedule
and more information by calling Marilyn & Earl Rose at
918-336-3086 or email
mbr1925@cableone.net.
When you’re in downtown Grove
don’t forget to stop by at The Brush and Palette Art
Gallery. There you can visit some of Grand Lake’s finest
artisans. They hold monthly themed art shows open to all
artists. The works on display right now feature our
favorite returning water visitor, the White Pelican.
They are open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Wednesday through
Saturday located at 116 S. Main Street in the historic
Village Barn.
Coming up next week, join the
Grand Lake Audubon Club on October 18 for the Owl Watch
field trip. This trip will depart from the Wal-Mart
parking lot, north of the wildlife area to car pool at
5:15 pm. Don’t be late as they depart on time. If you
want more information on this field trip or any of their
Club’s other wildlife trips, contact George and Frances
Webb at 918-542-2024. Grand Lake Audubon takes monthly
field trips to observe birds, wildflowers and nature.
The public is invited and encouraged to join them.
And lastly, I want to invite
everyone to stop here at the Grand Lake Visitor Center
on Monday, October 20 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Join the fun
while Santa’s Old Broads hold their “Halloween Sippin’ &
Signin’ Party.” They’ll be celebrating the arrival of
their newest cookbook; “Doing It ‘Round the World.” The
ladies will have samples from the cookbook for your
tasting treats, beverages and music. Proceeds from the
sale of the cookbook go to buying gifts for
disadvantaged area children.
